Ingredients for Braised Beef
Beef shank | Ginger |
Star anise 3 pieces | Cinnamon stick 1 piece |
Bay leaves 5 pieces | Cooking wine or white wine 4 tbsp |
Light soy sauce 4 tbsp | Rock sugar |
Salt To taste | Oyster sauce 3 tbsp |
Soybean paste 2 tbsp | Dark soy sauce 2 tbsp |
White pepper A bit | Dried chili 3 pieces |
Steps to Make Braised Beef

Step 1
Remove the skin from the beef shank, blanch with ginger and scallion
Step 2
Put all the spices in, add water to cover the beef shank. Bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat
Step 3
After an hour, poke the beef with chopsticks, then continue to simmer for another hour. Mine simmered for about two hours. The beef shank is ready when the chopsticks can easily poke through. Adjust the taste midway if needed
Step 4
The cooked beef shank must be soaked for at least 6 hours. I cooked it at noon and it was delicious the next day at noon. My two kids ate more than half of the beef shank
